TRANSPORTATION TOPIC NO 3: GUIDE TO THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF CYCLEWAYS
This guide, based on experience gained over the last 25 years in the construction of over 40 km and 100 underpasses in the new town of Stevenage, is for new cycleways. Route planning should review the objectives for the purpose of the cycleway. The transportation model should be used where possible to forecast use levels. Forecast flow and desire information should be applied to the land use plan. Recommendations are given for the method of surveying the selected routes. Cross sectional design is discussed giving suggested widths and depths. Horizontal alignments are planned at 1/500 scale, possible variations are discussed in conjunction with design of footpaths and highways. Gradients generally should not exceed five per cent. Links to main cycleway routes should be spaced according to lane availability and need. Cyclists and pedestrians should be segregated where flows are heavy. The design of intersections is discussed; vertical segregations from motor vehicles is required. Experience has shown that underpasses are better than overbridges. Recommendations are given for the design of retaining walls, drainage systems and lighting. /TRRL/
