SIMPLIFYING SIGNS TO PUBLIC CAR PARKS

A recent German survey has shown that it is possible that up to 40 per cent of the traffic in town centres at peak periods could be motorists looking for a place to park. Examples are given to illustrate the multitude of signs used at present. The author suggests ways of simplifying and unifying the signs. More frequent use should be made of a simplified version of the standard doe sign no 734.8 (signs and general directions 1975 no 1536). If this sign were used universally, there would be little need for any others. High intensity reflective material should be used in poorly lit areas or where electricity is not available. The simplified sign with p and chevron only can be side-fixed more satisfactorily. It is also important that the motorist is warned when a car park is full and is directed to another park with available spaces. Markings on the carriageway itself showing the way in are also very useful. /TRRL/
