RESULTS OF OUTDOOR EXPOSURE TESTS ON PAINTED BLAST CLEANED TEE SECTIONS

Hot rolled mild steel test pieces were prepared for painting by blast cleaning to Swedish SA2 or SA3 quality or by a hard nylon brush after no weathering, 7 days' exposure or 28 days' exposure. Half these test pieces were painted in a variety of ways under good laboratory conditions as soon as possible after cleaning, the other half were left before being painted for 24 hours in an atmosphere of high humidity. After painting, the test pieces were exposed in a marine or urban atmosphere and inspected after 9, 18 and 24 months. The test pieces were then assessed according to percentage of rusting. Negligible rusting occurred in about 30%, while about 25% failed completely. /TRRL/
