PROTECTION OF SUSPENSION BRIDGE AND STAYED GIRDER BRIDGE CABLES AGAINST CORROSION

LA PROTECTION ANTICORROSION DES CABLES DE PONTS SUSPENDUS ET A HAUBANS

There exist in France over 300 suspension bridges. The most recent cables contain strands with bright or galvanized wires and they are arranged in layers of separate cables or in bundles with closely- or loosely-wound cables. They are subject to variations in stress which can lead to cracking of the protective system already subjected to normal ageing. Protection against corrosion was carried out by the application of products containing pitch or bitumen, hence the necessity of using compatible products in the maintenance operations. Because the pitch and bitumen products did not give full satisfaction, a study was set up, after observations on approximately 50 structures, of the selection of the best protection systems for cables made of steel or galvanized wires. Tests were carried out in the laboratory on sections of cables together with control application over 1 metre on real structures. The results led to the selection of systems easy to apply and efficient against corrosion. /TRRL/
