MAINTENANCE-FREE BRIDGES

The study deals with the bridge construction principle used in Canada, of galvanizing structural components by means of immersion and spray galvanizing other components. It is possible to obtain a maintenance-free surface in a matter of decades (more than 36 years in the most difficult cases) by the use of hot dip galvanization, although the supplement to din 50960 entitled "electroplating steel" states one should reckon with the removal of 1.0 to 3.4 mm layer of zinc annually. When galvanizing, it is necessary to eliminate all faults in the galvanizing works. Hot dip galvanized highly torqued bolts are used for joining transverse beams, main beam bearings and bridge decks made predominantly of trapezoidal ribbed steel sheeting. The paving of carriageways and footways is carried out in the usual way. /TRRL/
