INJURIES CAUSED BY SAFETY BELTS

VERLETZUNGEN DURCH SICHERHEITSGURTE

The three point safety belt has proved to be most effective in the prevention of injuries occurring in private motor vehicles. Emergency services working at the scene of the accident report a considerable increase in safety belt use although an increase is also indicated in the incidence of injuries caused by the belt itself. Available literature provides reports on a number of consequences of injury. However, these make no mention of the correct use of safety belts. In the case of patients from the Wuerzburg area who represent the increase in thorax injuries registered for 1974, it was possible to confirm that the over exact and erect positioning of the safety belt had caused the patient's posture to be wrong. This fact is demonstrated on the basis of four examples. Having made a brief reference to the mechanics of this injury type the article makes recommendations regarding the use of safety belts. This study aims at encouraging the correct use of the three point safety belt. /TRRL/
