EMBANKMENTS ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL. PART 2 OF THE SPECIAL BULLETIN: "SLOPE STABILITY"; 2 - CUTTINGS AND EMBANKMENTS

LES REMBLAIS SUR SOILS MOUS

The general report outlines standard methods of studying stability. An investigation is conducted into the real behaviour of embankments which have been subject to disorders, and the difference between behaviour forecast and the real behaviour is stressed. An analysis is made of this difference and of the influence of factors, such as failure curve, strength of the embankment, and the effect of time and anisotropy on the undrained cohesion of the subgrade. The results of effective stress calculations are examined together with movement calculations. The two following articles deal with the measurement of the strength of the subgrade. Details are given of a vane apparatus with coaxial trowels for measuring shear in the horizontal and vertical plane. Laboratory tests which were carried out to determine the law of behaviour and which take into account the soil initial conditions, rate of shear and anisotropy are described. The last two articles give data on 2 cases of failure of embankments on compressible soil. In the first, triggered off experimentally, numerous measurements were taken. The second, which was observed during the construction of an experimental embankment, was unexpected; the safety coefficient that had been calculated did not envisage disorders of that scale. /TRRL/
