FLOATING RIGS TAKE SPECIAL MONITORING AND CONTROL DEVICES
Floating drilling rigs, both ship-shape and semisubmersible types, are generally well equipped with drilling, mud, and pressure-control instruments as well as monitoring devices. There are, however, conditions existing during the drilling operations caused by wind, waves, and tides that are unique to those operations and which create the need for special measuring and control instrumentation. Discussed items unique to floaters include heavy-compensator stroke indicators, wire-line work measuring devices for measuring effects of vessel motion, riser angle indicators, and instruments for measuring crane loads.
