CASE STUDY FROM THE JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION, LONDON: THE RESPONSE OF BUILDINGS IN PARK PLACE TO UNDERGROUND EXCAVATION AND COMPENSATION GROUTING
Subsurface structures including an emergency escape shaft and passenger interchange passage were constructed beneath Park Place as part of the Jubilee Line Extension Project, London. These subsurface works were carried out in close proximity to several sensitive existing buildings. Protective measures, comprising compensation grouting within the underlying London clay, were incorporated into the project to help control the tunnelling-induced ground subsidence and corresponding building movements. Precise levelling and total station 3-D surveying of the building facades were employed to monitor the responses of the affected structures. This paper describes the responses of two of the buildings, Brooks's Club and No. 4 Park Place. The results show that building movements were controlled to within +/- 8 mm vertically and +/- 5 mm horizontally. The building responses were generally rigid vertically with very small essentially negligible degrees of straining and twisting horizontally. The effectiveness of facade monitoring within the confines of the street is confirmed with an accuracy of better than +/- 2 mm, sometimes sub-millimetre, vertically and horizontally being achieved.
