ASSESSING RUST PREVENTION IN LUBRICANTS

The IP 135 standard test method, which is widely used to assess the corrosion-inhibiting properties of lubricating oils, suffers from a number of disadvantages, one of which is the large amount of oil needed. This less frequently used Fed 791B method requires less oil but an take up to a week to yield results. The Author, of the B.P. Research Centre, Sunbury, Middlesex, describes a new method which is free from these drawbacks. It requires inexpensive equipment and small quantities of oil, and gives sensibly reproducible results within a one-day working period. It has functioned satisfactorily with nine different corrosion inhibitors, and seems suitable for more general use in the assessment of corrosion of ferrous metals by water/oil mixtures.
