INITIAL WEAR OF GEARS

An experimental investigation of the running-in process of gears was made on a back-to-back test rig with hobbed and shaved gears of SIS 2216 steel working against SIS 2240, both quenched and tempered and at different speeds and loads. Measurements of surface roughness and examination of surface replicas were used to study the running-in process. It was concluded that the process is completed in less than 0.3 x times 10 to the sixth power revolutions; and that the initial wear of the flanks is not large but increases with speed and applied load. The increase is more marked with hobbed flanks. It was also concluded that examination of surface replicas is useful for studying changes in tooth flanks, and may be used with advantage on gears in service.
