SELF-PROPELLED (TRANSPORTER) PLATFORM CARRIES 400 TONNES ON ITS 180 SQUARE METERS

The Italian firm of Cometto have built a self-propelled platform for the movement of bulky and very heavy loads in a Rumanian shipyard. The vehicle comprises two identical sections, each measuring 15 x 6 m, which can be joined side-by-side or end-to-end, and can carry a total load of 400 tonnes. Each section is driven by a 320-hp F12L413 Magirus Deutz Diesel engine which operates a pump supplying oil to 20 independent hydraulic motors, one for each of the 20 wheel axles. The hydraulic suspension system equalizes the load distribution on all wheels and enables the platform to be kept level even under unequally-distributed loads or on sloping ground. The maximum laden and unladen speeds are 9 and 13 km/h respectively, and the vehicle has excellent manoeuvrability, being able to turn virtually about its own axis. The arrangements of the roller bearings for the wheel hubs and the wheel-axle steering pivots, all supplied by SKF, are described. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,326.
