INTERPRETATION AND SIGNIFICANCE OF ANISOTROPIC DEFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF SOFT CLAYS
In this paper, the cross anisotropic elastic theory is used to describe the deformation behavior of soft sensitive clays, taking into account the difference in behavior in effective stress loading and unloading. The stress-strain relationships are written in terms of effective stress. Since the deformation of soft clays is small, a sensitive apparatus was designed to measure the three normal strains in orthogonal directions. The complete set of ten elastic parameters was determined from drained triaxial tests on square-sectioned samples trimmed with their long axes oriented at zero, 45 and 90 degrees from the vertical. Results of tests on specimens trimmed from block samples of a Leda Clay showed that the deformation behavior is significantly anistropic; the anisotropic elastic parameters determined from drained and undrained tests agreed reasonably well. A preliminary evaluation appears to indicate general consistency in the prediction of all principal strains, pore pressures and volume change.
