DUAL PURPOSE

The Aberdeen Tunnel joins the north and south of Hong Kong Island. Siemens Ltd, Hong Kong and the Intelligent Traffic Systems Division (Munich) of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group have been awarded a contract to modernise the tunnel operations and traffic control system. An automatic incident detection system was deployed on the access roads inside and outside the tunnel. Inside the tunnel, a direct incident detection system based on the Traficon VIP/I detectors will be installed. The data collection and detection algorithms are outlined. Variable message signs are used to show messages in both English and Chinese.
