MAINTENANCE COSTS HAVE BEEN REDUCED FOR MEDIUM--SPEED DIESELS
As a result of the recent scarcity of orders for large vessels, the race to increase cylinder size and output of medium-speed diesel engines has been called. Development work on the larger, "third generation" engines continues, although at a slower rate, but it is the medium-power models that continute to sell. Research and development efforts of the manufacturers have been focused lately on improving the reliability of these engines and decreasing maintenance costs. Several engines have been uprated, however, and some builders are experimenting with two-stage turbocharging to raise output without increasing size.
