HOW TO LUBRICATE DIESELS LOVINGLY
The world's energy crisis has made marine power plant design a very dynamic, fast-changing technology. Diesel designers are increasing engine operating pressures and temperatures. While this increases fuel efficiency substantially, it puts a greater burden on the thin film of oil between moving parts. Better lubricants and more reliable application are needed to match the fuel-saving designs of the engines, so says Burnett J. Schulz, Mobil's marine technical services manager. A symposium, sponsored by Mobil Oil Corporation, was recently conducted in New York on the Care and Lubrication of Marine diesel engines. This article reviews the technical presentations on a number of aspects of diesel lubrication such as: Crosshead diesel cylinder lubrication; Crosshead diesel engine system oil; medium speed trunk diesel engine lubrication; practical aspects of marine diesel engine lubrication; diagnosis of engine operation and oil condition through used oil analysis; mobile marine test kits for shipboard use; wear and corrosion protection through lubricant performance; and marine fuels.
