RAIL GRINDING AS A NOISE CONTROL MEASURE
Usually, railway noise impact on the environment is reduced by means of either noise barriers or noise insulation of buildings. However, the obvious way of reducing the source emission using rail grinding is very often neglected. It is well-known, that the wheel-rail contact is bound to produce rolling noise as it is virtually impossible to make both parts perfectly smooth. The cost and effectiveness of different strategies of rail grinding is investigated and compared to other noise reduction measures relevant for railways.
