REAR WHEEL GUARDS INSTALLED ON WASHINGTON, D.C. BUS FLEET

The installation of 'S-1 Guards' has been completed on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's heavy duty bus fleet. WMATA is the first large transit authority in the country to place the rear wheel safety devices on its entire fleet. These guards are manufactured of specially formulated polyurethane elastomers mounted in front of the curbside rear wheels and their purpose is to move falling passengers and pedestrians away from the wheels and reduce injuries. WMATA expects to recoup the $1.5 million retrofit cost within a few years by reduced liability claims.
