The international oil company Shell has recently taken delivery of a series of eight 30,000 tdw products tankers. These ship are unique in that they have a 3.3 kV auxiliary power plant and electrically driven cargo pumps. Other special features are the absence of any kind of steam raising plant and the use of two medium-speed engines driving a common gearbox for both propulsion and power generation for the cargo pumps and the general ship's service.
