MOVING CLOSER TO PERFORMANCE-BASED TRACK GEOMETRY INSPECTION
This article reports on preliminary steps for development of a "black box," which will generate real-time, performance-based information about track geometry. It can be used to predict how certain types of vehicles will perform under specified track conditions. That would enable better targeting of repairs and re-designs and prevent de- railments. Hoppers, tank cars and coal gondolas were observed to create a database to develop a neural network of vehicle/track interactions as another part of the effort to predict relations between tracks and specific vehicles.
