COMPARISON OF URBAN AND RURAL ROAD SAFETY STRATEGIC PLANS

As part of its commitment to "Safety First", Victoria's Road Safety Strategy, VicRoads is coordinating and providing funding assistance for the development of municipal road safety strategies across Victoria. Through this initiative, ARRB Transport Research Ltd developed Road Safety Strategies for the City of Greater Bendigo and the City of Brimbank, and is currently developing a Road Safety Strategy for the City of Yarra. The basic process taken to develop a comprehensive municipal road safety plan in urban and rural municipalities was similar. However there are many differences, as well as similarities, in the safety issues that are relevant to each municipality, and in the education, enforcement and engineering actions that are appropriate to address them. For example, a key safety issue that was identified in Greater Bendigo is rural run off road crashes, which is not relevant to Brimbank, Yarra, or other urban municipalities. This paper compares the urban and rural road safety strategies for Brimbank, Yarra and Greater Bendigo, in particular the safety issues identified and the actions proposed.
