TESTING THE ADVERSE VISIBILITY INFORMATION SYSTEM EVALUATION (ADVISE) : SAFER DRIVING IN FOG

During the 1995-2000 winter seasons, the Utah Traffic Lab tested the Adverse Visibility Information System Evaluation (ADVISE). ADVISE uses sensors along the highway to detect the density and sight distance of the fog and then sends messages to Variable Message Signs (VMSs). The system sends messages to drivers instructing them how fast they should go using an algorithm based on the sight distance. The purpose of this research is to measure the effectiveness of the system in reducing the variability between speeds
