A DESIGN METHOD FOR GAP-GRADED ASPHALT MIXES
The article describes investigations into the effect that the composition of the mortar has on properties of the complete asphalt mix. A total of 27 mix compositions were studied, and the asphalt properties considered are Marshall stability and quotient, rut depth in a tracking machine and voids in the mix. The effect of bitumen type on results of creep tests and on relative deformation is described; whereas there is little increase in deformation resistance to be gained by using bitumens harder than normal, the use of bitumens of reduced temperature susceptibility should improve substantially the deformation resistance. A design procedure is suggested which would enable gap-graded asphalt to be made to a performance specification. /TRRL/
