CORRELATION OF CALCULATED AND MEASURED DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF BRIDGES

Calculations of the vertical vibration of nine bridge superstructures have been made using desk and computer methods. Good correlation was obtained between measured and calculated fundamental frequencies and mode shapes. For higher modes the correlation was less satisfactory. Calculations made for two cantilever and suspended span structures, assuming that they behaved as continuous beams, gave good results for the fundamental mode. Natural frequencies calculated using desk procedures were in close agreement with computer values, even for bridges having a wide spanwise variation in section properties. Calculated values of acceleration response to two types of dynamic loading were in reasonable agreement with the small number of measured values available. /Author/
