DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES--ONTARIO OBSERVATIONS

During the past twenty years a number of investigations of the dynamic response of highway bridges to the action of heavy vehicle loading have been completed in the Province of Ontario. A summary of the results of these investigations is presented in terms of dynamic deflection, speed and longitudinal flexural frequency for a given superstructure. The dynamic response of a superstructure is found to be a complex function of riding surface roughness, the bounce and pitch frequencies of typical commercial vehicles, vehicle speed and the longitudinal flexural frequency of the superstructure. For a superstructure frequency range between 2 and 5 Hz a quasi-resonance phenomenon appears to exist between vehicles and superstructure. The results are not presented in a design format. A reliability-based second moment format is suggested for dynamic load allowances whereby the dynamic interaction between vehicles and superstructures can be described for design purposes. /Author/
