SOCIO-ECONOMIC RESEARCH ON AUTOMATED-GUIDEWAY TRANSIT

This article describes an ongoing Urban Mass Transportation Administration program: the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) Socio-Economic Research Program which was designed to examine the appropriateness of this new transit technology as a means of satisfying presently unmet or ineffectively met urban transportation requirements. The program is structured as 5 major activities: generic alternatives analyses activity (will perform comparative trade-off analyses of AGT and other modes), assessments activity, costs activity, market activity (will apply the findings of the comparative analyses to site specific urban areas), and communications activity (will disseminate the findings of the various activities). The article also defines AGT systems and describes AGT system characteristics.
