ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS ON DRILL RIG CONFIGURATIONS
Factors in determining an exploratory drilling rig's potential work capability for operations in the Eastern Seaboard coastal region are engineering oriented, predicted upon oceanographic and meteorological weather forecasting, sea-floor composition, and order-of-magnitude vessel response amplitudes to sea conditions. Determined from the response information is the percentage of allowable time exceeded for each motion when related to the drill floor operational constraints of drilling, tripping, running casing, etc. The drill-floor activities are described as percentages of the total operation from which a cost-effective utilization factor is obtained. From an assigned utilisation factor, the rig's potential work capability is determined as a function of initial probable difference in capital costs and the comparative operational capabilities of limitations inherent in each concept. The geometry of rigs reviewed covers a wide spectrum of twin-hull semi-submersibles, drillships, and bottom-supported multi-legged self-elevating platforms.
