VERTICAL NARROW-BEVEL HIGH-SPEED MIG WELDING METHOD DEVELOPED BY KOBE STEEL

A brief description is given of MACH ARC, a narrow-bevel, high-speed, MIG welding method developed by Kobe Steel Ltd, for the vertical welding of side shell plates of ships and oil-storage tanks. The method uses a strap-shaped electrode 1.2-mm thick and 11-mm wide which is fed into the weld line at speeds between 1 and 5 m/min. Plates up to 20 mm thick can be welded at a rate of 20 cm/min, i.e. three times that of conventional electro-gas welding. There is also less deterioration of the heat-affected zone.
