STUDY ON THE TRANSOM STERN WITH LEAST STERN WAVES
On the assumption that a high-speed ship with transom stern can be represented by a uniform longitudinal pressure distribution, the Authors derive an asymptotic expression for the velocity potential near the stern. They use this velocity potential to deduce an explicit expression which describes the relation between the pressure distribution and the cross-sectional shape of the stern; from this they show that the shape giving the minimum stern-wave resistance is an arch-type of cross-section. Some experimental results obtained with a model having the arch stern are quoted. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,475.
