PROCEDURES FOR THE USE OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHODS
The role of non-destructive testing (NDT) in the management of bridges is described. The barriers currently preventing the full benefit from being obtained from the NDT techniques available include the limitations of the methods, interpretation of the data, relevance for any particular application, high cost, and lack of appropriate specifications. Testing is usually initiated as part of the inspection process, as part of the procedure for assessing load carrying capacity, or as part of the maintenance process. Publications on standards (specifications) for these procedures are outlined. The UK Highways Agency has recently set up a Steering Committee to oversee the development of Advice Notes on NDT techniques. Each advice note will contain a description of the techniques in sufficient detail for a non-specialist client or an engineer to understand the physical principles behind the methods and their strengths and limitations.
