THE DESIGN AND USE OF SHIPBOARD RAMPS
The ramp between the stern, or the bow, of a ship and the shore is similar in many ways to a land bridge. Many of the design procedures are similar but some aspects are significantly different. However, it is well to keep in mind this role of the ramp as a bridge and not allow it to be surrounded with too much mystique. The paper reviews cargo handling requirements, axial ramps, slewing ramps and the reliability of these systems. The author feels that the system is in transition and in future the ports may provide the ramps instead of being carried with the ships.
