COMPUTER PROCESSING OF DAMAGE DATA BY BUREAU VERITAS

The Authors, of Bureau Veritas, first describe the conventional procedures that have been employed by the Society to collect, record, and use information on failures and damage in ships and their machinery and equipment, and outline the events leading up to the introduction of the present computer-assisted data-processing system. This computerized system is described in some dtail. The Survey Report and the Damage Report submitted by the surveyor to the Bureau Veritas head-office are illustrated and explained. Codified information from the Damage Report is punched on to cards for input to the system. The various programs are written on COBOL, controlled by ICES, and use CDL and ICETRAN for description (these systems and sub-systems are briefly explained); the data are stored on magnetic discs. Questions can be put to the computer in clear language (English or French) to obtain a variety of information relating directly or indirectly to a type of damage or failure; some examples of output are included in the article. At present, the system covers Diesel engines, turbines, reduction gears, main thrust-bearings, shafting, propelelrs, and main boilers. It will be extended to include certain items essential for safety, such as fire-detection systems; this will need more direct collaboration with shipowners, shipyards, and manufacturers. It has not so far been considered possible to use computer techniques for hull structural damage and defects, and the need for dosing so is not pressing. The Authors' view that a damage file should also contain comprehensive data about equipment that has not suffered damage is briefly discussed. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,592.
