DOCK-LIFT AND SHIP-MOVING INSTALLATION
After discussing the general advantages of the ship-lift and its associated ship-moving arrangements, for both repair work and newbuilding, the Author describes the construction and merits of the particular system chosen for the Korgerwerft, Rendsburg. The extension of this yard, carried out by Philipp Holzmann AG, included a "dock-lift" system supplied by Frieseke & Hoepfner GmbH, of Erlangen; this ship-lift system went into service in April 1977, since when it has been operated, without any problems, by the shipyard personnel. The lift platform is supported by eight columns, each with its own hydraulic hoisting-unit. Both automatic and manual control are provided at a central console, and electronic monitoring ensures that the platform is kept level. The ship, on a carriage or carriages and supported by blocks, moves off the platform in the longitudinal direction, is transferred (still on the carriages) to a transportation platform, and is then hauled transversely to a newly-built hall, where the carriages are used again for moving the ship longitudinally into the hall. The carriages and platform run on rails and are hauled by a special tractor (a winch could also be used). The article describes the installation and its equipment and operation in some detail. The lift platform is 50 m by 14 m, and total lifting distance is 7.15 m (from 5.15 m below water-level to 2 m above); permissible useful load is 900 tonnes. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,501.
