CAPALONGA KONGSBERG GAS TURBINES FOR DYNAMIC POSITIONING
After a four-month refit and conversion (making her suitable for firefighting as well as other duties) by the Amsterdam Drydock Co., the offshore diving-support ship Capalonga operated by Sub Sea Oil Services, has started operations for Shell in the Brent and Auk fields in the North Sea. The article gives a brief description of the various additions and alterations made to the ship. These included the installation of a dynamic positioning system having four 735-kW Schottel thrusters, two forward on the centreline and two aft on outrigger "buoyancy structures"; they are powered by electric generators driven by three 1,450-kW Kongsberg KG2 gas-turbines installed in a new engine-room, and are controlled by a Kongsberg computer system. The fire-fighting equipment installed includes four Skuteng 1,700-sq m/hr monitors on the forecastle, which has been raised by fitting an extra deck; the Thune-Eureka pumps are driven by Kongsberg gas-turbines. The diving system has been provided with a second bell-lowering system and a third decompression chamber. Kort nozzles have been fitted to the two main propellers; the main superstructure has been enlarged and a new deckhouse has been erected. The article, which includes profile drawings of the ship before and after her conversion, mentions a number of other modifications that have been incorporated. The work was done under Lloyd's Register supervision. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,436.
