MACGREGOR SLEWING RAMPS FOR THE RHEINFELS AND REICHENFELS

Sasebo Heavy Industries and Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft have delivered the 14,300-dwt Ro-Ro/container ship Reichenfels to Hansa Line of Bremen. Both the Reichenfels and the Rheinfels, ordered by the same company and due for delivery before the end of 1977, are provided with a comprehensive outfit of Ro-Ro access and internal communications equipment of MacGregor design and manufacture. The Slewing ramps are of particular interest, when fully extended each ramp has a total length of 35 m. The 7-m wide clear carriageway allows two trailers, with a maximum weight of 80 tonnes each, to pass at the midpoint of the ramp. The maximum angle of inclination of the main ramp section, relative to the horizontal, is plus or minus 8 degrees, giving the ability to accommodate a tidal range of 1 to 5 m below quay level at the extremes of draught. The ramp can be placed on the quay within the range of 33 degrees port and starboard of the ships' centreline. It can also be used in the shortened mode, employing Section 1 only, with Sections 2 and 3 locked in the folded position below Section 1. The ramp is hinged to a turntable which turns on a 500-mm diameter king pin running on a ground slide ring. Slewing is achieved by heaving on and veering appropriately the winches which serve the suspension wires in a manner similar to that of a heavy-lift derrick with twin topping lifts.
