SUMMARY OF PROGRESS THROUGH 1977 (NCHRP)

The organization and objectives of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) are stated, the formulation of specific programs is described, and the programs received to date are noted. The financing of the program, and the contracting and monitoring of projects are discussed. Systematic planning for getting research results into practice and the implementing of research results are described, and examples are given of utilization of NCHRP research results. The program policy ensures maximum exposure of research while in progress in the hope that research results will soon find there way into practice in the form of policies, procedures, specifications and standards of State highway and transportation departments. The progress of NCHRP projects grouped in 22 subject areas is outlined and summaries are presented of unpublished reports: Traffic Signal Warrants; Guidelines for Uniformity in Traffic Control Signal Design Configurations; Determine the Luminous Requirements for Retroreflective Highway Signing.
