THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF CORROSION AND FOULING AT SEA
Since BSRA's anti-corrosive and anti-fouling services became established in the Marine Coatings Laboratory at Poole, Dorset, in 1975, there has been a steady and significant increase in the laboratory's activities. Shipbuilders, shipowners, paint manufacturers and companies marketing materials and equipment for use in a marine environment have been providing growing recognition of the staff's expertise in a wide variety of fields and, as a result, a number of major projects is in hand. Both services--supervisory and inspection--are available separately on a one-off basis or together in a complete package, BSRA's Maintenance-Inspection Scheme. Under this scheme a specialist visits a ship in dry dock at prearranged intervals and carries out an inspection of the relevant areas. Hull roughness measurements are taken using the BSRA Hull Roughness Analyser, and instrument specially developed by the Association for the purpose and considered by many to be the most advanced of its kind in the world. It provides the inspector with a portable means of measuring roughness with automatic print-out and helps him to determine with a high degree of precision the type of treatment the hull should receive. The work of BSRA's Marine Coatings Laboratory is outlined in this above booklet.
