RAMP RASH: PAYING MORE MAY COST YOU LESS

In 1997, the cost of accidents and incidents on airport ramps was estimated to be about $2 billion, much of which was uninsured losses. The direct costs represent only a relatively small part of the overall costs of such incidents. The indirect costs can be far more substantial. Perhaps the greatest danger associated with these incidents lies not with those incidents that are reported but with those that go unnoticed or unreported. These typically involve moderately gentle contact between a vehicle on the ramp and the structure of the aircraft, commonly known as "ramp rash," and appear to produce no or only minor damage, if detected at all. This article looks at these ramp rash incidents, the financial costs and safety implications, and what can be done to reduce their incidence.
