MINNESOTA'S INTELLIGENT VEHICLE INITIATIVE
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), in cooperation with the United States Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is conducting a major Field Operational Test (FOT) of Intelligent Vehicle Initiative technology. The vehicle technology assists drivers in low visibility conditions including blowing snow, rain, fog and darkness by providing the driver with lateral control guidance and warnings to avoid collisions. The system provides a computer-generated view of the roadway lane edges and visual radar tracking of nearby vehicles--essentially an overlay of information in the driver's field of view that compensates for the poor visibility conditions. The FOT is focusing on specialty vehicles and their operators - snowplows, State Patrol squad cars and ambulances. The field operational test will begin October, 2001. The project will evaluate the ability of this technology to reduce collisions, enhance operations, and improve overall public safety and mobility. The technology employed includes Differential GPS, magnetic pavement marking tape, radar detection, a windshield heads-up display and several types of warning devices. The system design and evaluation is centered on human factor considerations through extensive simulation and field-tests involving drivers. The evaluation will establish the costs and benefits of these systems as well as the potential for marketplace deployment in specialized fleets and eventually light passenger vehicles. This paper provides a project description and status report including: system design, human factors testing, road infrastructure (pavement tape, DGPS, etc.) and vehicle systems, and evaluation plan.
