PROPELLER CAVITATION NOISE AFTER 35 YEARS OF STUDY
A reexamination of old experimental data indicates that it may be feasible to perform scale-model measurements of propeller cavitation noise to predict the noise level and spectrum of the noise generated by the full-size prototype. The levels cannot be predicted as a function of the absolute value of the cavitation number sigma, but rather only as a function of a cavitation intensity ratio. It is not yet possible unfortunately, to estimate the inception cavitation number of the prototype from model measurements without using empirically or theoretically determined scale factors. The proposed scaling relations for noise generation are verified by the old full size and model data, where tip-vortex cavitation was the source of noise. No comparable data for other forms of cavitation have been found permitting comparison with the proposed scaling relations.
