NORTH SEA OFFSHORE DEVELOPMENTS, PRODUCTION AND TANKER DEMAND

The study has concentrated on three major themes, namely; a detailed appraisal of known oil and gas field development plans with a particular emphasis on delivery systems. A consideration of those factors likely to influence North Sea production levels through the 1980's; an assessment of the growing impact of North Sea oil and gas production on the world tanker market. Future North Sea production is shown to be major factor in prolonging the current tanker surplus, a result of the substitution effect whereby both oil and gas production in the North Sea replace long-haul imports of crude oil from the Middle East, which has traditionally been the marginal source of European energy supplies. The adverse consequences of future North Sea production on tanker employment will be felt primarily in the VLCC market, as these particular vessels carry most of the oil shipped from the Middle East to Europe. However, some additional tanker demand in the smaller size ranges is forecast as a result of developing North Sea coastal and export trades and also by offshore tanker loading at North Sea oil fields. This restructuring of tanker demand is further improving the relative advantage of small/medium-sized tonnage.
