THE POTENTIAL OF BURNING WATER-IN-FUEL EMULSIONS AT SEA
Emulsifying water into a 60% residual fuel as one stage of a marine gas turbine's fuel processing system has been proven to be economical and safe. Similar systems for marine boilers have resulted in cleaner firesides and reduced smoke. Several laboratory studies of the use of such emulsions in diesel engines are encouraging in that they indicate moderate fuel savings while reducing NOx. This survey paper discusses recently completed laboratory results for diesels, and the potential benefits, costs, and cautions in the use of water-in-fuel emulsions for gas turbines, boilers, and diesels in marine and naval service.
