CANADIAN ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS FOR THE ROAD TRANSPORTATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
This paper describes the Canadian Standards that have already been or are now being developed to ensure safe and accessible transportation systems for persons with disabilities. These standards cover both private and public vehicles, as well as personal mobility aids, securement systems, and other adaptive equipment. The paper outlines the process for the development of national standards, the requirements for verification testing, the essential elements of the standards, and the major controversial issues that arose during their preparation. It concludes with a discussion on the implementation of the standards.
