ANALYSIS OF SHIP HULL GIRDER RESPONSE TO SLAMMING
The primary objective of the Research program, sponsored by the American Bureau of Shipping was to find a consistent functional relation between ship-hull girder stiffness and its response to slamming. The ultimate aim was to establish "a simple method of prediction of any ship-hull-girder response to slamming such as might be incorporated in ABS rules". The computer program SHVRS was used for the analysis. The main feature of the method of analysis was the ship idealization by a lumped mass system and the use of a computer simulation technique. The responses obtained from the computer output were analyzed using the concept of a non-dimensional bending moment, dynamic load factors and relative size. The most consistent response function was given by "dynamic load factors" for different ships. Then an effort was made to identify the significant ship-parameters responsible for causing the differences in the response. A simple sensitivity analysis was conducted, on the assumption that mass magnitude, added mass magnitude and distribution, stiffness magnitude and distribution, engine room location were the primary independent variables. Using these, by trial and error a consistent response function was obtained, whose validity has yet to be proven analytically and which should be examined by further research. The ships used for the study were the bulk carrier "Fotini-L", the tanker "Odense", the Great Lakes ore carrier "Ryerson" and the general cargo carrier "Michigan".
