MARINE TRANSPORT OF BULK COMMODITIES IN SLURRY FORM- AN ASSESSMENT

The paper includes a status report and assessment of the state of the art of transporting dry bulk commodities by ship in slurry form, with emphasis on the export of steam coal from the United States. Analysis of slurry systems for comparable projected trade routes is made by summarizing results of recent studies of proposed coal export opportunities. The analysis include consideration of the export and import terminal characteristics, ship characteristics, and alternative slurry handling systems. Problem areas requiring further study are indicated and required research and development identified. Problems considered of particular importance at this time include optimization of particle size to suit nature of the coal, pumping and dewatering requirements. Dewatering of slurries, and terminal design as part of total system design, are major problem areas requiring study and development.
