A RATIONAL METHOD FOR THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF SHIP BULKHEADS

A method has been laid down for the structural design of a typical ship bulkhead. The semi-empirical formulations of the classification societies have been investigated to find out if they may be expressed in terms of rational mechanics. It is shown through a treatment of stiffener scantling formulation that this may be done. The design of ordinary subdivision bulkheads is done with allowance for a permanent set while that for a deep tank bulkhead is based on a higher strength standard. The semi-empirical formulations of the American Bureau of Shipping have been accepted for use in the determination of scantlings because they incorporate the Bureau's experience with the performance of the structural members and because their standards must be conformed to ultimately. A computer program has been devised to demonstrate the use of this method for the design.
