ANALYSIS AND CONTROL OF DISTORTION IN WELDED ALUMINUM STRUCTURES WITH EMPHASIS ON BUCKLING DISTORTION
The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part deals with the state of the art of welding distortion. Analytical and experimental results on transverse shrinkage, longitudinal distortion, out-of-plane distortion, and buckling distortion obtained in the last three years by M.I.T. investigators are thoroughly and critically summarized. Methods for reducing and preventing distortion are reviewed and evaluated. The second part deals specifically with the problem of buckling distortion. Analytical expressions are derived for the critical stress for various welding cases and boundary conditions using the theory of elasticity and the deformation and incremental theories of plasticity. Comparisions are made between the two plasticity theories.
