NEW OUTLOOKS FOR GUARDIANS OF SAFETY: EXPLICIT VERSUS IMPLICIT RISK ANALYSIS INCLASSIFICATION/CERTIFICATION
In recent years the role of the major international classification societies has expanded in scope to include marine structures which can be no longer described as ships, and where the overall safety assessment is made by direct analytical methods within a framework of regulations which may not be those of the classification societies. As guardians of maritime safety, the major international classification societies are now being called upon to make explicit risk analyses, as well as continuing in the traditional classification role of evaluating implicit risks in marine structures.
