PRAXITELE: A TRANSPORTATION CONCEPT

This article presents a synthesis of the principal results conducted in France by a team investigating self-service electric cars. Called Praxitele, it is an innovative transportation concept, which, like some other projects backed by a number of European cities, strives to provide the public with: (1) a clean, relatively quiet mode of transportation in order to combat air and noise pollution; (2) a personal model of transportation used by different people at different times in order to reduce the amount of space and parking time; (3) a self-service transportation mode offering flexibility and 24-hour-a-day service through the use of a noncontact smart card to provide access to the car; and (4) a personal transportation mode that is designed to supplement the public transport system for certain trips, sections of the community and zones.
