WORLD GAS SUPPLY

This report presents the results of the current world energy outlook as an aid to planning and as a means of assessing the implications of the changing world environment. Projections to 1990 are based on studies completed at the end of 1977. Projections cover the economic growth and energy demand, conservation, world energy demand and supply, energy supply lead times, world electric power outlook, world nuclear power outlook, world coal and gas supply, new energy sources, discovery of world crude oil reserves, pattern of world oil supply, and would oil trade. The report includes, among others, the following remarks: Economic growth will be slower in the future than in the past; a significant shift in the pattern of energy supply by fuel is seen; a continuing trend toward greater use of energy in the form of electricity and a larger increase in the demand for coal is expected; gas consumption will grow more slowly in the past-much of what has already been and is projected to be discovered is located far from consumers, and requires major transportation projects to deliver it; the projected pattern of oil supply required to balance world energy demands shows a continuing need for growth in supply from the oil exporting nations; the resources of the oil exporting nations appear adequate to supply the requirements indicated through 1990; and, the U.S. is projected to account for an increasing share of the trade in oil for the next few years, as imports are needed to supplement domestic oil and gas production.
